YouTube Sailing Has a New Anti-Hero!
Updated: Jan 12
Have you ever had one of those friends that was into that cool band early, and then that band shot off like a rocket? Or that trend you thought was weird but then everyone started doing/wearing/living it? You know.. being on the front end of something you just know is cool. Well have I got the sailing YouTube channel for you. It just started but it is about to blow up the YouTube sailing internet.
OK, stick with me for a minute. There is this guy in southern England who bought a boat (a contessa 26), no experience, no real money, and nothing but challenges. And he has the power to turn the table on all the self-serving sailing content out there. There will be others that will try to do what it is he is doing. But this man is an original.
His name is Tery, and his honest approach to documenting the ridiculous (not at all ridiculous) life adventure he is embarking on is some of the best content I've seen on YouTube... and he just started.
Now don't get me wrong; The sailing gatekeepers out there are smelling blood in the water. They are ready to pounce! But if you know anything about Sail Junky Magazine we are the anti-gatekeepers. Hell, my boat isn't that much farther along than Tery's. But while I have focused on the deeper side of what this boat journey is doing for me personally, Tery is sharing his journey in such a warm and funny way that I'm hooked! And he knows the gatekeepers are out there.. but he doesn't care.
So if you are not a sailing gatekeeper, and you believe that learning and living are the adventure, then I implore you to start watching Tery's journey with us. Here, just watch his first video. It's a great taste of what's in store.
Is it highly produced? Well honestly, I love the production and editing he is doing. It's authentic and real and from my perspective (as a guy who has done editing as a job before) it's actually quite good.
Tery, in my opinion, has just hacked the Matrix (YouTube). His honesty, wit, and charm is going to redefine the sailing YouTube genre... at least for authentic content.
If you have read any of the channel reviews we've done here the BIG glaring common thread in what we love is authenticity. Truth. I'm sure there are plenty of people that get tricked by stupid titles like, "We almost sank".. or "Are we about to be attacked by pirates?". No jerk. Those are locals or fisherman trying to say hi or make a trade with you. You are not authentic. You are vapid. You suck. Sorry. Stepping slowly off my soapbox.
Tery is not that and we are so excited to see content like this because quite frankly, it exposes what authentic, funny, and engaging content is versus the other garbage that clutters our feeds.
Tery, this is an open letter to you. Please keep doing what you are doing, exactly like you are doing it. We are loving it and we will support you all the way. You are our new hero. (Anti-hero?) I don't know but whatever it is, it is just what we needed. Thank you for sharing your journey and humor with us.
So.. SailJunky Magazine is now proud to be a Patron of Tery's on Patreon. Please go watch his content, consider supporting him. Follow his journey.
This is what YouTube should be.
